An Open Letter to Senator Chuck Schumer

Dear Senator Schumer,

I understand that government shutdowns have historical precedent as a last-resort tactic during a budget impasse or disputes over key policy issues such as border security, healthcare, tax policy, and foreign aid. However, as you well know, the current crisis extends far beyond routine policy disagreements.

The President is systematically implementing the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, disregarding both legality and morality. He has empowered a private donor to undermine critical data privacy protections for all Americans. He has unlawfully fired federal employees, cut off foreign aid, embraced U.S. adversaries, and destabilized both the national and global economy with reckless trade wars. His administration is openly attacking the First and Fourteenth Amendments, directly endangering civil rights. He has even expressed intentions to annex foreign territories, with no regard for international law, and has shown interest in the ethnic cleansing in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice, rather than upholding the Constitution, has been weaponized to serve as the President’s personal prosecution team, targeting political opponents, journalists, public health experts, and media outlets at his whim.

This is no longer a routine budgetary debate or a disagreement over economic theory—it is a deliberate assault on the foundations of American democracy. Billionaires seeking to accumulate more multigenerational wealth and therefore -political power, foreign adversaries like Putin eager to weaken the U.S. and NATO, and China positioning itself as a more stable global partner are all benefiting from this chaos.

The U.S. economy is being decimated. The Federal Government is being dismantled. Federal workers and their families are being devastated. Our allies are being abandoned.

This is not the time for compromise with what was once a political party but has now devolved into a criminal enterprise.

Sincerely,

George A. Polisner
